Metadata

Copyright in the information downloaded from the DIA website is and shall remain the property of the Government of Western Australia. All rights reserved. This includes, but is not limited to, information from the Register of Places and Objects (often known as the 'Sites Register') established and maintained under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972.

Aboriginal sites have been recorded for more than 30 years on a geographic index. Historically, the index was based on a grid reference where site locations ranged from a one kilometre square cell to a 10 kilometre square cell, depending on the degree of significance of the site.

Since 1998, site locations and extents have been mapped as accurately as possible. The locations and extents of 'open' sites are publicly available, whereas the locations and extents of restricted sites have been dithered within one or more two kilometre square cells to protect the site, and are not accurately represented within the public dataset.

Most of the information on heritage sites is stored in an extensive collection of written reports, photographs and archived reports. A digital database has been derived from this collection, and is linked to a Geographic Information System which provides broad characteristics for any registered site by reference to a site identification (ID) number.
